Prologue
…deep in the heart of uncharted space…

            “Is it radio?”  Captain Thunder raised a quizzical eyebrow at the bridge officer beside him.   He tried not to stare at her gently pointed ears.  Relayer females were inherently beautiful and Commander Khatru was no exception.

            “No Captain.  RF transmissions have not been used for hundreds of years.”  She favored
him with a raised eyebrow and then returned to her work.

           “Isolate the transmission, Commander.  We need to know who… or what… we’re dealing with.”             Relayers ruled their emotions with iron discipline.  Khatru’s family lived on the shores of the Topographic Ocean on their home world.  They were known to be strong willed and highly disciplined.   Khatru brought a level of calm organization to the often chaotic bridge of Starship Prog.

           “Captain, I’m getting an indicator.  I believe the transmission is part of a large space network.  

           Sir… incoming transmission.”

            “On screen, Mister.”

           A large bald smiling head resolved on the screen.  “Admiral Stephens to Starship Prog. You have been monitoring our network.”

           Thunder stood and faced the viewscreen.  “That’s right. I’m Captain Thunder.  What do you want?”

            A hand appeared as the man on the screen stroked his chin and grinned. “Well, Captain, we are purveyors of positive purpose positioned to preview the past.”

           Thunder and Khatru looked at each other with carefully neutral expressions.  Thunder turned back to the screen and said, “What?”

           Stephens laughed.  “I’ll tell you a secret.  It’s all in the music.  We’d like to invite you to join our command.  We can send you to new places.  Interested?”

            Thunder didn’t understand the sudden rush of… positivity… that he was feeling.  “Why, yes Admiral."

           So the adventure began…
